Shengshui activity map

Sheung Shui, located in the New Territories of Hong Kong, is a region steeped in both modernity and tradition. It is part of the Fanling–Sheung Shui New Town in the North District, with Fanling Town lying to its southeast. Historically, Shek Wu Hui served as the main marketplace for the Sheung Shui area, bustling with activity since the 1930s. The area has evolved significantly over the years, with private residences now towering over the old flats in the market. Sheung Shui Wai, a walled village originally inhabited by the Liu clan, is home to the Liu Man Shek Tong Ancestral Hall, a declared monument of Hong Kong. The Fung Kai No. 1 Secondary School, established by the Liu clan, is notable for being the largest secondary school in Hong Kong by area. Sheung Shui has also experienced tensions due to its proximity to mainland China, particularly in the context of cross-border trading, which has transformed the town and its local economy. The town has become a hub for traders who purchase goods in Hong Kong to sell in mainland China, leading to a shift in the local retail landscape and contributing to anti-mainland sentiment and localism movements. Despite these challenges, Sheung Shui remains a vibrant community with a unique position as a gateway between Hong Kong and mainland China.
