Indiana is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States. It is the 17th most populous and the 38th largest by area of the 50 states. Its capital and largest city is Indianapolis, which is also known as the "Crossroads of America" because of its central location and many highways. Indiana became the 19th state to join the Union on December 11, 1816. It is bordered by Lake Michigan and Michigan to the north, Ohio to the east, Kentucky to the south, and Illinois to the west. Indiana has a diverse geography, ranging from the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan to the rolling hills and forests of Southern Indiana. Indiana is also home to many historical and cultural attractions, such as the Indiana Dunes National Park, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the Children's Museum of Indianapolis.
