North Karelia
The culture of Finland's easternmost region carries influences of the Eastern Orthodox faith. If you want to see a bear or a wolf in its natural habitat, this is probably the destination to go.
North Savonia
North Savonia is the home of many events from a strawberry festival to the wife carrying world championship. Other points of fame are the signature dish kalakukko (a loaf of bread stuffed with fried fish) and its recognizable dialect.
Finland Proper
The southwesternmost part of Finland is called Finland Proper for historical reasons. The largest city here, Turku, is the oldest city of Finland and hosts a castle and a cathedral that are amongst the oldest in the country. The archipelago that reaches all the way to the Åland islands is another popular destination in the region and especially beautiful in the summer.
Satakunta
This region hosts two UNESCO World Heritage Sites; Rauma's old town and the Sammallahti bronze age burial site. The sand beaches of Yyteri are also quite popular in the summer.
Southern Ostrobothnia
Southern Ostrobothnia (Etelä-Pohjanmaa) is a region of Western Finland. The region is made up of 18 municipalities. Southern Ostrobothnia is truly a region with many attractions and things to do for visitors. The regional center of Southern Ostrobothnia is Seinäjoki, with nearly 60 000 inhabitants.
Ostrobothnia
Ostrobothnia (Swedish: Österbotten, Finnish: Pohjanmaa) is a stretch of coastal Western Finland. The historic province of the same name has been split in parts; this is the one where Swedish speakers are found.
Central Ostrobothnia
Central Ostrobothnia is both geographically and population-wise relatively small. Most things of interest can be found in the region's largest city Kokkola. The town Kaustinen hosts a huge yearly folk music festival.
South Karelia
South Karelia (Etelä-Karjala, Södra Karelen) is in Southern Finland, by the southern shores of the lake Saimaa. South Karelia's population is about 136 000.
Kymenlaakso
Kymenlaakso is a region in Southern Finland named after the valley of river Kymijoki.
Uusimaa
Uusimaa (Swedish: Nyland) is a region along the coast in Southern Finland, with hundreds of islands, some big lakes and inland countryside. The Finnish capital Helsinki is in central Uusimaa.
