Kansas is a state in the Midwestern United States that became the 34th state on January 29, 1861. Its name comes from the Kansa Native Americans who lived along the Kansas River. The state is landlocked and bordered by Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Colorado. The geographic centre of the 48 coterminous United States is marked by a limestone shaft and a flag located in a pasture near Lebanon, Kansas. The state's capital is Topeka and its largest city is Wichita, which is known as the Air Capital of the World because of its role in aircraft production. Kansas is mostly used for agricultural purposes, but also has sectors in tourism, financial services, and government.
