Chengmai activity map

Chengmai County, a gem nestled in the northwestern part of Hainan Island, China, boasts a rich tapestry of history and culture. With records dating back to 110 BC, it has been a significant region since the times of Emperor Wu of Han. The county's name, as we know it today, was established during the Sui dynasty reorganization in 607. Its lush landscape is marked by a tropical climate, abundant sunshine, and moderate rainfall, creating ideal conditions for a variety of tropical crops, especially melons. The county spans an impressive 2,067.6 square kilometers, offering a diverse terrain that includes more than 20 rivers, which contribute to its robust agricultural and aquacultural industries.

The main urban area, Jinjiang Town, is a harmonious blend of history and modern development. It sits proudly on the Nandu River's north side, against a backdrop of a large hill that is seeing rapid growth with high-rise apartments. Government buildings crown the hilltop, while a large park near the center provides a green oasis in the urban environment. The old section of Jinjiang, by the river, contrasts with the newer buildings, showcasing the county's growth over time.

Economically, Chengmai is a powerhouse, with mining being a predominant industry. The county is rich in natural resources, including quartz, limestone, crystals, and even precious metals like gold and silver. Remarkably, over 5 billion tonnes of high-grade quartz remain untapped, alongside vast reserves of limestone and kaolin. These resources not only drive the local economy but also attract businesses and investors from various sectors.

For visitors, Chengmai County offers a plethora of attractions. The Hainan Golden Temple and Yongqing Temple are just a couple of the historic sites that reflect the county's spiritual heritage. Nature enthusiasts can explore the Jigong Mountain or the tropical monsoon forest at Jialongping Tourist Area. Those looking for leisure can visit the Fushan Coffee Culture Town, where the aroma of fresh coffee blends with cultural experiences.

Chengmai's commitment to preserving its natural beauty while advancing economically is evident in its development plans. The county is a microcosm of Hainan's broader growth, balancing ecological preservation with modernization. It stands as a testament to the region's ability to honor its past while forging a path towards a sustainable and prosperous future.
